What a fantastic run home this evening over the North Yorkshire moors, passing through Grosmont, Pickering etc following a lovely day at work…

Our first call was in Washington for annual service and replacement of one of the spheres on Stu’s fab MGF mpi. Stu had also asked us to give the car a check over prior to his and Mandy’s NC 500 run. Lovely to see Mandy, thanks for the cuppa. Shame not to see Stu, but a post from him later was good to see as they headed out for fish and chips at the beach.

We then went over to Billingham to fit a Daytona to Gary’s TF 135, that he’s been having such a lot of fun with since purchasing her last year. He wanted a stainless back box and loved the look of the quads. They really suit the car.

Our journey continued on to Loftus, Saltburn-by-the-sea where it was great to see Karl again. His TF 135 was losing coolant and Karl had suspected it was from the stat or the inlet manifold. His suspicions were correct with the thermostat, the union that connects it to the back of the water pump had sheared off. So we replaced this along with stainless steel engine bay coolant pipes. Date to be sorted for some other things. Lovely to have cuddles with Gizmo again, should have remembered to bring a carrot! Lovely to see Gary, who popped in to say a brief hello on his rounds, hope you have a lovely, not too noisy, run out in ‘Madam’ later!

Beautiful weather all day with lovely people and their fab cars.

Slightly distracted this evening, bit of a late finish and a long day…

But not distracting from the work we have just finished on one of the lovely John Prewer’s fab fleet.

The work was completed this evening on the conversion of his TF 135 to a 160.

Head and wiring loom and ECU replaced. Together with a change of the cambelts and the timing covers.

It’s always interesting doing these conversions and so good to hear the car start on the first turn of the key. Big thanks to John’s mum for a very welcome cup of tea!

The day started off in York and lovely to see Ruben again and his MGF Project, absolute credit to Ruben, as mentioned in a previous post, for everything he has done to this car that had been abandoned for 12 years. So the inevitable happened a month or so ago and Ruben asked if we could come over and sort it for him. The original gasket was an elastomer one with plastic dowels. The car looks amazing since we last saw it, recent spray job and the interior is beautiful. So good that Ruben can enjoy it again, his 21st birthday present from his family is one of the Jakobi tonneaus and he can’t wait to get it fitted.

We called in to Sowerby again, in between calls to replace the wheel bearing on Rachel’s MGF, the top ball joint was also shot so replaced this. Central locking mechs fitted, but still having issues with the alarm going off randomly, this was traced to be a problem with the boot wiring. Central lock mechs still not great so will source some more, which are proving hard to get hold of mk 1 mechs. Adjustments made to the new roof seals. Early start

Beautiful sunny morning with an early start ahead of a busy day at the workshop.Our first visitor was David who had got in touch back in April, as a result of one our business cards being slotted under the wipers of his MGF 143 VVC, courtesy of Susan Farley, when stopping off in Rothbury on a day out.

David stayed over locally last night and we returned him back to his digs so he could spend the day in York.Cambelt service carried out, alternator belt replaced, radiator replaced (his was the original that was a tad on the crumbly side), new grills fitted to the front, oil change, the slam panel etc needed a bit of fettling and new shiny kit fitted, few other niggles sorted out too. Good to see the smile on David’s face when we picked him back up and he saw the changes. Big thanks to Susan from us and David.



Great to meet Phil finally, who came over for a health check on his new acquisition, a TF 135 in Royal Blue. Date booked in next year ahead of the MOT. Hope you both enjoyed your run out to Dalby Forest, we know you’re waiting for the hard top comments! Great to meet you and have a chat, look forward to seeing you again next year!

Ray had got in touch a couple of days ago as he had noticed a slight loss in coolant, so he popped over, from Hull, for us to investigate what was occurring. Finally it was sourced to be the heater control valve that had sprung a leak. One is now on order and date to be arranged to fit. Really nice to have a chat and a catch-up.Finishing touches done to Zara, ahead of her return home. Bit tired now, but a really enjoyable day. Admin time now and Gas Monkey to watch followed by an episode of the Grand Tour.

MG TF car collection

A run down to Windsor today to collect Ian’s lovely ‘Zara’, his TF 135 for a few things at the workshop over the next few days.
With a call in on the way in Ratby to check out a small coolant loss on Mike’s MGF.

Traced to be a hose, well hopefully for Mike that’s all it is, he will keep an eye on it and let us know.

Busy day on the roads, saw quite a few classics out and about, which was great to see, whilst driving through some crazy weather!

Back in the workshop

Couple of enjoyable and productive days back in the workshop again…

Pete’s very tidy TF 135 was up on the lift yesterday morning for underfloor treatment, underfloor coolant pipes replaced with stainless and brake fluid change.

Then today the rest of underfloor treatment was done and all looking really good.

Great to see David again today, who we last saw when we did the head gasket replacement on the car, in Grimsby, a couple of years ago, on his lovely looking TF 135 in Firefrost Red, this one is 1 of 31 produced in CEV paint with the PUU trim. It was very admired by the postmen and our neighbours whilst in with us today.

Minor service carried out, plus health check. Grease points greased up and sill drainage holes checked, a couple needed unblocking. Code read showed zero error codes.

Few finishing touches on Pete’s car and all ready for collection at the weekend.

Rough Luck Racing Update

A nice run out to the north east today…

Soft ride kit fitted to Jim and Jennifer’s very tidy TF 135, in Cramlington, ahead of their trip round the NC500. All went on really well with no snags. Lovely to see them both and have a chat and eat cake and scones!

We then popped over to Pity Me, where it was good to meet Richard who had asked if we could pump up the suspension, on his newly acquired MGF, when we were passing. The previous owner had actually lowered the car deliberately, as wanted the slammed look! Not great for speed bumps etc. Looks a lot nicer now.

Lovely weather today too. Now home to get a few phone calls done etc.

Rough Luck Racing Update

We’re now back home after a successful last day on our trip…

Malcolm had contacted us, back in January, to ask if we could come and replace the clutch on his TF 135, that he has been renovating for the last few years. Malcolm had previously worked for Rover in the paint shop in the early 1980’s.

We left our digs this morning and headed over to Sunningwell, a beautiful little village near Abingdon.

Everything came apart really well, which made us suspicious, thinking it was going to be an awkward one putting back together, but our suspicions were unfounded and the gearbox just slid back on easily.

The clutch release arm was very seized, so this was eased off. Clutch nice and free now. Although unknown, this looks like it was the second clutch to be fitted to the car as the original ones were Borg & Beck. This one had certainly done it’s time, as it was worn down to the rivets on the clutch plate and the car was only on 80k miles, usually clutches are good for up to 100k miles.

We went back to see Paul’s lovely dad in Walsall, as it was lost in translation that he also wanted a minor service on his Rover 75. It’s a good job I don’t do that very often! It was on our way home anyway, and a nice to have the chance to have a chat again to him and Toby.

Albeit some long days it was another successful and enjoyable few days away, meeting lovely people and hearing their stories about how they came about owning their cars. Lovely locations and some cracking digs again.

Good to get back and see Puddin who was very vocal when we came through the door!
